Malaysia Extends Visa-Free Travel for Indian Tourists Until 2026

Indian nationals can now travel visa-free to Malaysia until December 2026. Enjoy a 30-day stay with just a return ticket and proof of sufficient funds!

Malaysia Extends Visa-Free Travel

In a move designed to strengthen tourism and economic ties, Malaysia has announced an extension of its 30-day visa exemption for Indian nationals until December 31, 2026. This decision is part of Malaysia’s broader Visa Liberalisation Plan, aimed at boosting travel and tourism in anticipation of the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025.

Simplified Travel for Indian Nationals

Since December 1, 2023, Indian citizens have enjoyed the convenience of traveling to Malaysia without a visa for stays of up to 30 days. To qualify for the exemption, travelers only need to present:

  • A return flight ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds (such as a bank statement or credit cards)

This change significantly reduces travel hassles, making it easier for Indian nationals to explore Malaysia’s vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and dynamic cities.

Enhancing Malaysia’s Appeal as a Tourist Destination

According to Saravana Kumar Kumaravasagam, the Consul General of Malaysia in Chennai, this visa exemption opens up great opportunities for Indian tourists to experience Malaysia’s attractions without the need for a visa application. He noted that the initiative is particularly beneficial for travelers from Tamil Nadu and across India.

Hishammuddin Mustafa, Director of Tourism Malaysia in Chennai, highlighted the positive impact of this initiative, stating that it reaffirms Malaysia as a preferred destination for Indian tourists. In addition, Tourism Malaysia is working with travel agencies and airlines in India to offer customized travel packages that cater to a variety of interests, from leisure tourism to business events, destination weddings, and educational tourism.

Record Growth in Indian Tourist Arrivals

The visa exemption has already shown impressive results, with Indian tourist arrivals to Malaysia significantly increasing. In 2019, prior to the pandemic, over 735,000 Indian nationals visited Malaysia. Following the launch of the visa exemption, this number surged, with over one million Indian tourists visiting in 2024. From January to November 2024, 1,009,114 Indian visitors arrived, marking a 47% increase over 2019 and a 71.7% rise compared to 2023.

This surge in tourist arrivals underscores the growing popularity of Malaysia as a travel destination for Indian nationals, further cementing the country’s role as a major hub for tourism in Southeast Asia.

Why India Loves Malaysia

Indian travelers flock to Malaysia for its diverse attractions, which include the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur, the tropical beauty of Langkawi, the cultural heritage of Penang, and the natural wonders of Sabah and Sarawak. With affordable travel packages and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, Malaysia has become a top choice for Indian tourists seeking both leisure and adventure.

Looking Ahead to 2026

The extended visa exemption is expected to play a key role in attracting even more Indian tourists to Malaysia in the coming years. With Visit Malaysia Year 2026 on the horizon, the country is set to welcome even more visitors, while solidifying its position as a key destination for Indian travelers.
