Indian students in Canada are facing growing anxiety after receiving unexpected emails from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), requesting the resubmission of essential documents. These include study permits, visas, and academic records such as attendance and grades. This move has stirred uncertainty, particularly among students whose visas are valid for up to two years.
The surge in document requests comes amid Canada’s tightening immigration policies, which include stricter financial requirements and the potential for caps on student admissions. These actions are part of efforts to better manage the growing number of international students.
Impact on Indian Students
Many students, particularly from regions like Punjab and Hyderabad, have been caught off guard. Avinash Kaushik, a postgraduate student from Hyderabad studying in Surrey, shared his surprise, saying, “My visa is valid until 2026, yet I was asked to submit all my documents again.” He was even asked to provide proof of attendance and details about his part-time job. Other students, especially those from Punjab, have been asked to visit IRCC offices in person to authenticate their credentials.
This sudden influx of email requests has left students feeling anxious about their future in Canada. “Many students are confused and worried. Some fear this could lead to delays or even rejections for those applying for jobs,” said Avinash Dasari, an undergraduate student from Hyderabad studying in Ontario. The added stress of meeting academic requirements, coupled with limited job opportunities, has exacerbated concerns.
Canada’s Tightened Immigration Policies
Canada is currently home to approximately 420,000 Indian students, the largest group of international students in the country. This comes as the Canadian government is introducing policies to manage the influx of international students more effectively. Experts believe these document requests are part of a broader strategy to control the number of international students.
Mehbub Rajwani, an immigration consultant in Toronto, pointed out that the document requests could be a way to filter out students who may not be attending legitimate institutions. “This may be an attempt to ensure that students are genuinely enrolled in their designated learning institutions (DLIs),” he said. He also noted that caps and stricter financial requirements may lead to a reduction in the number of students allowed into Canada.
A Growing Sense of Uncertainty
The sudden shift in Canada’s policies has led to frustrations and feelings of unfairness among students. Manisha Patel, a business management student from Adilabad studying in British Columbia, expressed her dismay: “I chose Canada for its welcoming environment, but this feels unfair. I’m already struggling to find an internship, which is mandatory in my final year. It feels like they don’t want us here anymore.”
Students are calling for clearer communication from the IRCC regarding these requests and the impact on their futures. Experts recommend that students act quickly to submit any requested documents to avoid potential complications, such as visa cancellations or delays in job applications. “Failure to comply with the document requests in a timely manner could lead to visa cancellations or future complications,” warned Rajwani.
While Canada remains a top destination for Indian students, recent developments have left many uncertain about their academic and professional futures. As the Canadian government tightens immigration rules, students must navigate these changes carefully to avoid further complications. For now, students are urged to stay calm, follow the instructions in the emails carefully, and ensure they comply with the document requests to protect their status in Canada.
