Good News for Tourists Traveling to China: Visa-Free Stay Extended to 10 Days

In a significant move to boost its tourism sector, China has announced a major relaxation of its visa-free transit policy. Starting immediately, eligible foreign travelers can now stay in China for up to 10 days (240 hours), an increase from the previous limit of 72 to 144 hours. This policy change was officially communicated by the National Immigration Administration (NIA) via its WeChat account on December 17, 2024.

What Does the New Visa-Free Policy Mean for Tourists?

Under the revised policy, citizens from 54 countries, including major nations like Russia, Brazil, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, can enter China without the need for a visa when transiting to a third country. This visa-free privilege applies at 60 open ports across 24 provinces, provided travelers stay within designated areas during their visit.

The visa-free stay has now been extended to a full 10 days, offering more flexibility to travelers looking to explore China while on the way to other destinations. This change marks a significant step in China’s efforts to revitalize its tourism industry following the end of strict COVID-19 restrictions in 2023.

A Step Toward Boosting China’s Tourism Industry

China’s decision to extend the visa-free stay is part of the country’s broader strategy to attract more international tourists. According to the National Immigration Administration, the policy is already showing positive results. In the third quarter of 2024, 8.2 million foreign visits were recorded, reflecting a 48.8% year-on-year increase in inbound tourism. Over half of these visits were facilitated by the visa-free policy, which saw a 78.6% increase in its use compared to the previous year.

This move is expected to encourage more international travelers to visit China and stimulate the country’s tourism sector further. As the world’s second-largest economy continues to open its doors, these changes will likely strengthen its position as a global tourism hub.

The Bigger Picture: China’s Visa Policies and Tourism Recovery

The relaxation of China’s visa-free policy follows a series of efforts to boost tourism after the pandemic. In November 2024, the Foreign Ministry expanded the visa-free policy to 38 countries, underlining China’s growing commitment to welcoming visitors from around the world.

Additionally, starting December 1, residents of Shenzhen can now apply for multiple-entry visas to Hong Kong, further easing travel restrictions. This change is part of a broader push to revive tourism in the region, as Hong Kong seeks to recover from a period of economic downturn and declining appeal among domestic tourists.

With the extension of the visa-free stay to 10 days, China is making it easier for tourists from around the world to visit and explore the country. This new policy opens up exciting opportunities for travelers, offering more time to experience China’s rich culture, history, and landmarks without the hassle of applying for a visa.
